Data
Centers, Lan Centers and Telecommunications Switches
CIGNA
DATA CENTER, Windsor, Connecticut
This project included a 50,000 sq.ft. addition to CIGNA's existing Data
Center in Windsor, Connecticut. This work entailed not only the design
of a two-story building addition, but also included the rework, and
renovation to the existing 100,000 sq.ft., two-story facility. Special
areas of design include incorporation of a 6,000 SF Enterprise Command
Center, Command Support Operations, Facility Security and Control, Lunch
Room, Fitness Center, Laboratory and Equipment Testing, as well as open
office planning.
The
newly expanded facility included construction of a new UPS system providing
ten new 625 KVA modules with associated battery strings, configured
into two five-module parallel systems. The new systems were set up with
two new switchboards, utilizing twenty-five new static switches to offer
maximum redundancy. The challenge for this project was to construct
the addition and renovate the existing space without any disruption
to the 7 x 24 operation. This was a critical factor as this is Cigna's
only operating center. Construction was completed in January of 2002.

Point of Service Center
This
communications switch, serving the greater Hartford area consisted of
15,000 sq.ft. of space, divided into two service nodes. One service
node dedicated to the Williams backbone equipment and the other service
node dedicated to outside vendor equipment. Both nodes were served by
two 10,000 amp power plants, composed of sulfuric acid standby batteries
and connecting rectifiers. Commercial power requirements for the space
required a 3200 amp/480 volt/3 phase service. The space was served by
two generators providing an ultimate generator service of 2075 KW. Air
conditioning requirements for the space required a total capacity of
320 tons of cooling.
